A diverse portfolio of stocks will always have winners and losers. But the goal is to pick stocks that do better than average. One such company is Ilsung Construction Co., Ltd. (KRX:013360), which saw its share price increase 100% in the last year, slightly above the market return of around 84% (not including dividends). The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 14% higher than it was three years ago.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year, Ilsung Construction actually saw its earnings per share drop 42%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.1% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Ilsung Construction's revenue actually dropped 6.9% over last year. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Ilsung Construction's TSR for the last year was 103%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Ilsung Construction shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 103% over one year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 3% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 5 warning signs for Ilsung Construction (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
