Daewon Cable. Co., Ltd. (KRX:006340) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 170% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large drop in price, it would still be understandable if you think Daewon Cable is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.5x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Electrical industry have P/S ratios above 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Daewon Cable's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For instance, Daewon Cable's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Daewon Cable will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Daewon Cable?

Daewon Cable's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 6.4%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 36% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 7.7% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Daewon Cable's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Daewon Cable's P/S

Daewon Cable's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Electrical companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We're very surprised to see Daewon Cable currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
