Subdued Growth No Barrier To Soosung Webtoon co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:084180) With Shares Advancing 30%

Published
KOSDAQ:A084180

The Soosung Webtoon co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:084180) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 30%. Looking further back, the 19% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies operating in Korea's Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider Soosung Webtoon as a stock to potentially avoid with its 1.7x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Soosung Webtoon Has Been Performing

Soosung Webtoon has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting this decent revenue performance to beat out the industry over the near term, which has kept the P/S propped up. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Soosung Webtoon's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Soosung Webtoon?

Soosung Webtoon's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 107% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 36% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Soosung Webtoon's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What Does Soosung Webtoon's P/S Mean For Investors?

Soosung Webtoon shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Soosung Webtoon revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Soosung Webtoon that you need to be mindful of.
