Here's Why We Think Kia (KRX:000270) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Kia (KRX:000270). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Kia's Improving Profits
In the last three years Kia's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. To the delight of shareholders, Kia's EPS soared from ₩13,495 to ₩22,152, over the last year. That's a fantastic gain of 64%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The music to the ears of Kia shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 8.4% to 12% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Kia Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a ₩46t company like Kia. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at ₩815b. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.
Does Kia Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that Kia has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in Kia's continuing strength. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Kia by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features.
