If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Sankyu's (TSE:9065) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Sankyu, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = JP¥44b ÷ (JP¥533b - JP¥138b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).
Thus, Sankyu has an ROCE of 11%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 9.0% generated by the Logistics industry.

So How Is Sankyu's ROCE Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 34% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 11%. Since 11% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
Our Take On Sankyu's ROCE
In the end, Sankyu has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 153% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
