If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Having said that, from a first glance at Sankyu (TSE:9065) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Sankyu:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = JP¥41b ÷ (JP¥550b - JP¥154b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
So, Sankyu has an ROCE of 10%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 8.8% generated by the Logistics industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Sankyu doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 10% from 14% five years ago. However it looks like Sankyu might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
The Bottom Line On Sankyu's ROCE
In summary, Sankyu is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Since the stock has gained an impressive 96% over the last five years, investors must think there's better things to come. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
