Trancom Co., Ltd. (TSE:9058) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 5th of December to ¥74.00. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.4%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Trancom's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Based on the last payment, Trancom was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 5.3%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 30% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Trancom Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥64.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥148.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 8.7% over that duration. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings have grown at around 2.1% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 2.1% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.

We Really Like Trancom's Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
