Tohbu Network Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 104% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 23%. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.

EPS is set to fall by 29.4% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 207%, which could put the dividend in jeopardy if the company's earnings don't improve.

Tohbu Network Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 2 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. The last annual payment of ¥15.00 was flat on the annual payment from2 years ago. Modest dividend growth is good to see, especially with the payments being relatively stable. However, the payment history is relatively short and we wouldn't want to rely on this dividend too much.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Over the past five years, it looks as though Tohbu Network's EPS has declined at around 29% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

Tohbu Network's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
