Sotetsu Holdings' Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Sotetsu Holdings' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.

EPS is set to fall by 1.5% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 26%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥25.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.1% per annum over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Sotetsu Holdings might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 4.9% per year. While EPS growth is quite low, Sotetsu Holdings has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.

Our Thoughts On Sotetsu Holdings' Dividend

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Sotetsu Holdings' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. While Sotetsu Holdings is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Sotetsu Holdings has 3 warning signs (and 2 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
