Shimadzu's (TSE:7701) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of Shimadzu Corporation (TSE:7701) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥34.00 on the 1st of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Shimadzu's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. However, prior to this announcement, Shimadzu was quite comfortably covering its dividend with earnings and it was paying more than 75% of its free cash flow to shareholders. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 79% shows that most of the cash is going back to the shareholders, which could constrain growth prospects going forward.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 17.5%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥9.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥58.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 20% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Shimadzu has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 12% per annum. Shimadzu definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.

Our Thoughts On Shimadzu's Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Shimadzu will make a great income stock. The low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, but generally we are not too happy with the payments Shimadzu has been making. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
