Toshiba Tec (TSE:6588) Hasn't Managed To Accelerate Its Returns

Published
TSE:6588

If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. In light of that, when we looked at Toshiba Tec (TSE:6588) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Toshiba Tec:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.11 = JP¥19b ÷ (JP¥350b - JP¥183b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).

So, Toshiba Tec has an ROCE of 11%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 9.2% generated by the Tech industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

Things have been pretty stable at Toshiba Tec, with its capital employed and returns on that capital staying somewhat the same for the last five years. Businesses with these traits tend to be mature and steady operations because they're past the growth phase. With that in mind, unless investment picks up again in the future, we wouldn't expect Toshiba Tec to be a multi-bagger going forward.

On a side note, Toshiba Tec's current liabilities are still rather high at 52% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.

Our Take On Toshiba Tec's ROCE

In a nutshell, Toshiba Tec has been trudging along with the same returns from the same amount of capital over the last five years. And investors may be recognizing these trends since the stock has only returned a total of 11% to shareholders over the last five years. Therefore, if you're looking for a multi-bagger, we'd propose looking at other options.
