Recomm (TSE:3323) Has Announced A Dividend Of ¥1.60

Recomm Co., Ltd. (TSE:3323) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥1.60 per share on the 29th of December. The dividend yield will be 2.2% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.

Recomm's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Based on the last payment, Recomm's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 15.9% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 245%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥1.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥1.60. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.8% a year over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Over the past five years, it looks as though Recomm's EPS has declined at around 16% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

Recomm's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
