Investors Shouldn't Overlook The Favourable Returns On Capital At NSD (TSE:9759)
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at NSD's (TSE:9759) ROCE trend, we were very happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for NSD, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.22 = JP¥15b ÷ (JP¥80b - JP¥13b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, NSD has an ROCE of 22%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the IT industry average of 15%.

How Are Returns Trending?
NSD deserves to be commended in regards to it's returns. The company has consistently earned 22% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 53% in that time. Now considering ROCE is an attractive 22%, this combination is actually pretty appealing because it means the business can consistently put money to work and generate these high returns. If NSD can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.
