IX Knowledge (TSE:9753) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥40.00

IX Knowledge Incorporated (TSE:9753) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 30th of June to ¥40.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.5%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

IX Knowledge's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, IX Knowledge's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 4.9% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 27%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

IX Knowledge Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

The company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long at all, so we can't really make a judgement on how stable the dividend has been. This doesn't mean that the company can't pay a good dividend, but just that we want to wait until it can prove itself.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Earnings have grown at around 4.9% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. Earnings growth is slow, but on the plus side, the dividend payout ratio is low and dividends could grow faster than earnings, if the company decides to increase its payout ratio.

In Summary

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Seiko could have an overlooked AI angle.

Buried inside the watchmaker is the world’s #1 supplier of SPXO crystal oscillator ICs, which are tiny timing chips increasingly needed for high-speed optical communications in AI data centres. It originally established this technology for its quartz watches.

Seiko says AI demand is already driving strong growth in the business.
