The 40% return delivered to WILLs' (TSE:4482) shareholders actually lagged YoY earnings growth

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the WILLs Inc. (TSE:4482) share price is up 38% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 24% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! However, the stock hasn't done so well in the longer term, with the stock only up 19% in three years.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for WILLs investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's one-year performance.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

WILLs was able to grow EPS by 51% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 38% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on WILLs, despite the growth. Interesting.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of WILLs, it has a TSR of 40% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that WILLs has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 40% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 5% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. Is WILLs cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
