Just Planning's (TSE:4287) Earnings Offer More Than Meets The Eye
Investors signalled that they were pleased with Just Planning Inc.'s (TSE:4287) most recent earnings report. Looking deeper at the numbers, we found several encouraging factors beyond the headline profit numbers.
Zooming In On Just Planning's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to July 2025, Just Planning recorded an accrual ratio of -0.18. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of JP¥536m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of JP¥421.0m. Just Planning shareholders are no doubt pleased that free cash flow improved over the last twelve months.

Happily for shareholders, Just Planning produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that Just Planning's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Just Planning at this point in time.
