Market Participants Recognise I'LL inc.'s (TSE:3854) Earnings Pushing Shares 26% Higher
Those holding I'LL inc. (TSE:3854) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 13% over that time.
After such a large jump in price, I'LL's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.8x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, I'LL has been relatively sluggish. It might be that many expect the uninspiring earnings performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is I'LL's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, I'LL would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 3.5% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 165% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 15% per annum as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.8% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that I'LL's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From I'LL's P/E?
The strong share price surge has got I'LL's P/E rushing to great heights as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that I'LL maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
