Cyberlinks Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:3683) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥16.00 on 28th of March. This will take the annual payment to 2.2% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Cyberlinks' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Cyberlinks was paying only paying out a fraction of earnings, but the payment was a massive 149% of cash flows. A cash payout ratio this high could put the dividend under pressure and force the company to reduce it in the future if it were to run into tough times.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 14.9% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Cyberlinks Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

The dividend has been pretty stable looking back, but the company hasn't been paying one for very long. This makes it tough to judge how it would fare through a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥8.00 in 2020 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥16.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 19% per annum over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Cyberlinks has impressed us by growing EPS at 15% per year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.

Our Thoughts On Cyberlinks' Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Cyberlinks' payments are rock solid. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
