YE DIGITAL's (TSE:2354) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
YE DIGITAL Corporation (TSE:2354) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 6th of November to ¥8.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.3%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

YE DIGITAL's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, YE DIGITAL's dividend was only 17% of earnings, however it was paying out 98% of free cash flows. While the business may be attempting to set a balanced dividend policy, a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 39.8% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 19%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
YE DIGITAL Is Still Building Its Track Record
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 7 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was ¥6.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥16.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 15% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. We are encouraged to see that YE DIGITAL has grown earnings per share at 40% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think YE DIGITAL will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
