Not Many Are Piling Into Mitsui High-tec, Inc. (TSE:6966) Stock Yet As It Plummets 31%
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Mitsui High-tec, Inc. (TSE:6966) share price has dived 31% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 55% loss during that time.
After such a large drop in price, Mitsui High-tec may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.2x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Mitsui High-tec certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Mitsui High-tec's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Mitsui High-tec's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 23% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 274% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 8.6% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 9.6% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.
With this information, we find it odd that Mitsui High-tec is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From Mitsui High-tec's P/E?
The softening of Mitsui High-tec's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Mitsui High-tec's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
