With A 27% Price Drop For J.E.T. Co., Ltd. (TSE:6228) You'll Still Get What You Pay For
The J.E.T. Co., Ltd. (TSE:6228) share price has softened a substantial 27% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Although its price has dipped substantially, J.E.T may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios under 14x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, J.E.T has been doing very well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as J.E.T's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 32% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 131% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why J.E.T is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate J.E.T's very lofty P/E. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that J.E.T maintains its high P/E on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for J.E.T (2 are significant!) that you need to be mindful of.
