Happinet (TSE:7552) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥105.00
The board of Happinet Corporation (TSE:7552) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 5.0% on the 23rd of June to ¥105.00, up from last year's comparable payment of ¥100.00. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 2.5%.

Happinet's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. However, prior to this announcement, Happinet's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 34.2% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 39% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥27.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥125.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17% a year over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Happinet has impressed us by growing EPS at 34% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
We Really Like Happinet's Dividend
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Happinet is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
