There's No Escaping Petgo Corporation's (TSE:7140) Muted Earnings Despite A 26% Share Price Rise
Despite an already strong run, Petgo Corporation (TSE:7140) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 7.3% isn't as impressive.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Petgo as an attractive investment with its 9.3x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Petgo has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Petgo?
Petgo's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 79%. As a result, it also grew EPS by 20% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 10% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Petgo's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Despite Petgo's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Petgo revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
