NEXTAGE (TSE:3186) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥34.00

NEXTAGE Co., Ltd. (TSE:3186) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 25th of February to ¥34.00. The payment will take the dividend yield to 1.3%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

NEXTAGE's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. NEXTAGE is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 19.2%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 32%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

NEXTAGE Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥1.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥34.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 42% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. NEXTAGE has impressed us by growing EPS at 21% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While NEXTAGE is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
