While Demae-Can Co.,Ltd (TYO:2484) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 21% in the last quarter. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. To be precise, the stock price is 573% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Because Demae-CanLtd made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Demae-CanLtd saw its revenue grow at 21% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Fortunately, the market has not missed this, and has pushed the share price up by 46% per year in that time. Despite the strong run, top performers like Demae-CanLtd have been known to go on winning for decades. So we'd recommend you take a closer look at this one, but keep in mind the market seems optimistic.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Demae-CanLtd's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Demae-CanLtd's TSR of 581% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Demae-CanLtd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 287% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 47% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Demae-CanLtd is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
