Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Koryojyuhan (TYO:3495). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Koryojyuhan's Improving Profits

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Koryojyuhan's EPS soared from JP¥230 to JP¥313, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 36%.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Koryojyuhan maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 34% to JP¥7.9b. That's progress.

Since Koryojyuhan is no giant, with a market capitalization of JP¥2.4b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Koryojyuhan Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Koryojyuhan insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 60% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Valued at only JP¥2.4b Koryojyuhan is really small for a listed company. That means insiders only have JP¥1.4b worth of shares, despite the large proportional holding. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

Does Koryojyuhan Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

You can't deny that Koryojyuhan has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value.
