Astellas Pharma Inc.'s (TSE:4503) investors are due to receive a payment of ¥37.00 per share on 3rd of June. This will take the annual payment to 5.0% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Estimates Indicate Astellas Pharma's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, the company wasn't making enough to cover what it was paying to shareholders. This situation certainly isn't ideal, and could place significant strain on the balance sheet if it continues.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 26.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.

Astellas Pharma Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥26.00 total annually to ¥74.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 11% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Astellas Pharma's EPS has fallen by approximately 25% per year during the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Astellas Pharma's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Astellas Pharma's payments are rock solid. In the past the payments have been stable, but we think the company is paying out too much for this to continue for the long term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
