Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Konami Group Corporation's (TSE:9766) 27% Share Price Surge
Konami Group Corporation (TSE:9766) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 116% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 14x, you may consider Konami Group as a stock to avoid entirely with its 45.4x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Konami Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Konami Group's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Konami Group would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 16% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 41% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 15% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.9% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Konami Group is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Konami Group's P/E?
Konami Group's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Konami Group maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
