The market for Wowow Inc.'s (TSE:4839) shares didn't move much after it posted weak earnings recently. We did some digging, and we believe the earnings are stronger than they seem.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
To properly understand Wowow's profit results, we need to consider the JP¥2.2b expense attributed to unusual items. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Wowow took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to March 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.
