Macromill's (TSE:3978) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Macromill, Inc.'s (TSE:3978) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥15.00 on 30th of September. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.8%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Macromill's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. However, prior to this announcement, Macromill's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 32.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 55% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Macromill Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
Even though the company has been paying a consistent dividend for a while, we would like to see a few more years before we feel comfortable relying on it. Since 2017, the dividend has gone from ¥5.00 total annually to ¥24.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 25% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Macromill's EPS has fallen by approximately 20% per year during the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Macromill's payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, Macromill has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
