Aeria Inc. (TSE:3758) Surges 26% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement
Aeria Inc. (TSE:3758) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 32% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, it would still be understandable if you think Aeria is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.3x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Entertainment industry have P/S ratios above 1.3x. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Aeria Has Been Performing
For example, consider that Aeria's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Aeria's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Aeria?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Aeria's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 11% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 28% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this in mind, we understand why Aeria's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Aeria's P/S
Aeria's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
It's no surprise that Aeria maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
