OAT Agrio (TSE:4979) swells 11% this week, taking five-year gains to 370%
Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. Don't believe it? Then look at the OAT Agrio Co., Ltd. (TSE:4979) share price. It's 302% higher than it was five years ago. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. It's also good to see the share price up 14% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 13% in 90 days).
The past week has proven to be lucrative for OAT Agrio investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last half decade, OAT Agrio became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. Indeed, the OAT Agrio share price has gained 51% in three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 7.2% each year. This EPS growth is lower than the 15% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So one can reasonably conclude the market is more enthusiastic about the stock than it was three years ago.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of OAT Agrio, it has a TSR of 370% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that OAT Agrio has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 28% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 36% per year, is even more impressive. Is OAT Agrio cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
