Daicel Corporation (TSE:4202) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥30.00 per share on the 24th of June. This will take the annual payment to 4.3% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Daicel's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Daicel is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 7.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 29% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Daicel Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥16.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 14% per annum over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Daicel has impressed us by growing EPS at 58% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio gives the company a lot of flexibility, and growing earnings also make it very easy for it to grow the dividend.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Daicel will make a great income stock. While Daicel is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for Daicel that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
