The board of Nihon Kagaku Sangyo Co., Ltd. (TSE:4094) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥30.00 per share on the 5th of June. This makes the dividend yield 4.1%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.

Nihon Kagaku Sangyo's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before making this announcement, Nihon Kagaku Sangyo was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 1.8% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 56%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Nihon Kagaku Sangyo Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥16.00 total annually to ¥60.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 14% per annum over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

Nihon Kagaku Sangyo May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Although it's important to note that Nihon Kagaku Sangyo's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. While growth may be thin on the ground, Nihon Kagaku Sangyo could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

Nihon Kagaku Sangyo Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In summary, it is good to see that the dividend is staying consistent, and we don't think there is any reason to suspect this might change over the medium term. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
