Nippon Sanso Holdings' (TSE:4091) 24% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same five-year period

When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. One great example is Nippon Sanso Holdings Corporation (TSE:4091) which saw its share price drive 174% higher over five years. Better yet, the share price has risen 4.9% in the last week.

Since it's been a strong week for Nippon Sanso Holdings shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, Nippon Sanso Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 18% a year. So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 22% per year. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Nippon Sanso Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was 192%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Nippon Sanso Holdings provided a TSR of 15% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 24% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Nippon Sanso Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Nippon Sanso Holdings .
