Further weakness as Teijin (TSE:3401) drops 3.5% this week, taking five-year losses to 19%

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term Teijin Limited (TSE:3401) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 30% over a half decade. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 23%. Furthermore, it's down 14% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

Since Teijin has shed JP¥8.0b from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

We've discovered 2 warning signs about Teijin. View them for free.

Given that Teijin didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

Over five years, Teijin grew its revenue at 5.7% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Given the weak growth, the share price fall of 5% isn't particularly surprising. The key question is whether the company can make it to profitability, and beyond, without trouble. It could be worth putting it on your watchlist and revisiting when it makes its maiden profit.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Teijin the TSR over the last 5 years was -19%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 3.2% in the last year, Teijin shareholders lost 20% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Teijin has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
