Platz Co., Ltd. (TSE:7813) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥14.00 per share on the 27th of September. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 1.8%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

Platz's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, Platz was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 4.1% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 17% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Platz's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Platz has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. This suggests that the dividend might not be the most reliable. The annual payment during the last 9 years was ¥12.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥14.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.7% a year over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Earnings have grown at around 4.1% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. While growth may be thin on the ground, Platz could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

Our Thoughts On Platz's Dividend

Overall, a consistent dividend is a good thing, and we think that Platz has the ability to continue this into the future. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
