It is hard to get excited after looking at Sysmex's (TSE:6869) recent performance, when its stock has declined 7.7% over the past three months. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financial performance over the long term, which in this case looks quite promising. In this article, we decided to focus on Sysmex's ROE.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Is ROE Calculated?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Sysmex is:

12% = JP¥58b ÷ JP¥464b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every ¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ¥0.12.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

Sysmex's Earnings Growth And 12% ROE

To begin with, Sysmex seems to have a respectable ROE. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 8.9%. Probably as a result of this, Sysmex was able to see a decent growth of 10% over the last five years.

We then compared Sysmex's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 6.2% in the same 5-year period.
