For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in KOIKE-YA (TYO:2226). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

KOIKE-YA's Improving Profits
In the last three years KOIKE-YA's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, KOIKE-YA's EPS shot from JP¥81.79 to JP¥172, over the last year. You don't see 111% year-on-year growth like that, very often.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. KOIKE-YA maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 13% to JP¥39b. That's progress.
In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. Click on the chart to see the exact numbers.
KOIKE-YA isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of JP¥27b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are KOIKE-YA Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that KOIKE-YA insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping JP¥7.0b worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That holding amounts to 26% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.
Does KOIKE-YA Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
KOIKE-YA's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering KOIKE-YA for a spot on your watchlist. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if KOIKE-YA is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
