The board of Shoei Foods Corporation (TSE:8079) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥25.00 per share on the 31st of January. This takes the annual payment to 1.0% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Shoei Foods' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, Shoei Foods was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

EPS is set to fall by 0.3% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 27%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.

Shoei Foods Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥12.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥48.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 15% a year over that time. It is good to see that there has been strong dividend growth, and that there haven't been any cuts for a long time.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings have grown at around 4.3% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. While EPS growth is quite low, Shoei Foods has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.

We Really Like Shoei Foods' Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The distributions are easily covered by earnings, and there is plenty of cash being generated as well. However, it is worth noting that the earnings are expected to fall over the next year, which may not change the long term outlook, but could affect the dividend payment in the next 12 months. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
