Examining Cashflow Against SAN-ALTD's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
SAN-ALTD has an accrual ratio of -0.17 for the year to August 2024. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. To wit, it produced free cash flow of JP¥25b during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of JP¥11.0b. SAN-ALTD's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On SAN-ALTD's Profit Performance
Happily for shareholders, SAN-ALTD produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that SAN-ALTD's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
