Some Sharp Corporation (TSE:6753) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 27% Pounding

The Sharp Corporation (TSE:6753) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 29% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Sharp's P/S ratio of 0.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Consumer Durables industry in Japan is also close to 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Sharp's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Sharp hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sharp's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

Sharp's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 7.0%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 13% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 5.5% per annum as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 0.7% growth each year, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this in consideration, we think it doesn't make sense that Sharp's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Sharp's P/S

Following Sharp's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It appears that Sharp currently trades on a higher than expected P/S for a company whose revenues are forecast to decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If we consider the revenue outlook, the P/S seems to indicate that potential investors may be paying a premium for the stock.
