We Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Mitsubishi Pencil (TSE:7976) Passed With Ease
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Mitsubishi Pencil (TSE:7976), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Mitsubishi Pencil Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. Shareholders will be happy to know that Mitsubishi Pencil's EPS has grown 34% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away satisfied.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EBIT margins for Mitsubishi Pencil remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 8.7% to JP¥76b. That's progress.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are Mitsubishi Pencil Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's a necessity that company leaders act in the best interest of shareholders and so insider investment always comes as a reassurance to the market. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Mitsubishi Pencil shares worth a considerable sum. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at JP¥2.5b. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. While their ownership only accounts for 1.8%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
Is Mitsubishi Pencil Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can't deny that Mitsubishi Pencil has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in Mitsubishi Pencil's continuing strength. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Mitsubishi Pencil is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Although Mitsubishi Pencil certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares.
