Itoki's (TSE:7972) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Itoki Corporation's (TSE:7972) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥55.00 on 28th of March. This takes the dividend yield to 4.1%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Itoki's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Itoki's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 16.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 40% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Itoki Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥13.00 total annually to ¥55.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 16% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Itoki has impressed us by growing EPS at 43% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Itoki will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
