Earnings Tell The Story For CrowdWorks Inc. (TSE:3900) As Its Stock Soars 26%
Despite an already strong run, CrowdWorks Inc. (TSE:3900) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 21% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Following the firm bounce in price, CrowdWorks may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 28.4x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios under 13x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, CrowdWorks' earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, CrowdWorks would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 18%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 41% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 22% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 9.8% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why CrowdWorks is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From CrowdWorks' P/E?
CrowdWorks' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of CrowdWorks' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
