Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By MT Genex Corporation's (TSE:9820) Low P/E
When close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 15x, you may consider MT Genex Corporation (TSE:9820) as an attractive investment with its 10.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
MT Genex certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as MT Genex's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 57% last year. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 7.2% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 11% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that MT Genex is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On MT Genex's P/E
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of MT Genex revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
Having said that, be aware MT Genex is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
