Sanko Gosei's (TSE:7888) Dividend Will Be Increased To ¥14.00

Simply Wall St

The board of Sanko Gosei Ltd. (TSE:7888) has announced that the dividend on 1st of September will be increased to ¥14.00, which will be 40% higher than last year's payment of ¥10.00 which covered the same period. This makes the dividend yield 3.3%, which is above the industry average.

Sanko Gosei's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, Sanko Gosei's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 8.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 20%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥8.00 total annually to ¥20.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.6% a year over that time. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Sanko Gosei has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 38% per annum. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
