Zooming In On Kokusai's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Kokusai has an accrual ratio of -0.23 for the year to September 2024. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥1.7b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of JP¥297.0m. Kokusai's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On Kokusai's Profit Performance
Happily for shareholders, Kokusai produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that Kokusai's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And it's also positive that the company showed enough improvement to book a profit this year, after losing money last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
