Stock Analysis
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Having said that, from a first glance at GS Yuasa (TSE:6674) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for GS Yuasa:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.089 = JP¥42b ÷ (JP¥657b - JP¥189b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, GS Yuasa has an ROCE of 8.9%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.4% average generated by the Electrical industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
There are better returns on capital out there than what we're seeing at GS Yuasa. The company has employed 63% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 8.9%. This poor ROCE doesn't inspire confidence right now, and with the increase in capital employed, it's evident that the business isn't deploying the funds into high return investments.
In Conclusion...
Long story short, while GS Yuasa has been reinvesting its capital, the returns that it's generating haven't increased. Although the market must be expecting these trends to improve because the stock has gained 79% over the last five years. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
