It's Down 32% But Seiko Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6653) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

The Seiko Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6653) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 32%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 13% share price drop.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Seiko Electric as an attractive investment with its 8.3x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Earnings have risen firmly for Seiko Electric recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Seiko Electric?

Seiko Electric's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 21% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 34% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

It's interesting to note that the rest of the market is similarly expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Seiko Electric's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Seiko Electric's P/E

Seiko Electric's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Seiko Electric currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider market forecast. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.
